I am a passionate software developer with expertise in backend engineering and a solid foundation in full-stack development.

About Me

Hi, I’m Jose Henriquez! I’m passionate about understanding how computers work and solving complex problems. I specialize in backend development using technologies like Node.js with Express and Python Flask to create REStful APIs, and have experience designing databases with PostgreSQL and MySQL. While my focus is backend engineering, I’ve also built full-stack projects using React and Tailwind CSS. During university, I led two major game projects, applying algorithms, database design, and software development. Recently, I’ve created full-stack applications, including AI-powered web and Android apps. In my free time, I enjoy golf, snowboarding, and motorcycle riding, which keep me inspired and motivated.

Education

Brock U Image

Bachelors of Computing and Business (Jan 2021- Dec 2024)

I hold a Bachelor of Computing and Business from Brock University, a unique interdisciplinary program blending computer science and business principles.

While the curriculum offered a balanced approach, I focused primarily on the computer science aspect, mastering topics such as data structures and algorithms, artificial intelligence principles, full-stack application development and deployment, network management, and Android application development. The program emphasized leveraging computing to solve complex problems, which I applied to various projects integrating these diverse skills. Notably, I served as the lead developer for two video games: an exploration and onboarding tool for the SickKids Foundation and a hack-and-slash game where I was responsible for all development and game logic. These experiences solidified my ability to apply technical and business knowledge in creative and impactful ways.

Notable Projects

Artistic Intelligence

Artistic Intelligence

Artistic Intelligence is an innovative app developed by a team of three, where I played a crucial role as the Backend/Platform Engineer. The app uses the diffusion API to generate and modify images based on user inputs like prompts and parameters. My responsibilities included setting up a Flask RESTful API server on a cloud-based platform, ensuring secure data transfers with Google authentication, and developing display methods for the Android app. I also managed the GitHub workflows and led project development meetings, ensuring a seamless integration and a reliable user experience.

Sick Kids Foundation Onboarding Program

Sick Kids Foundation Onboarding Program

As the lead developer for the SickKids Foundation Onboarding Game, I spearheaded the creation of an innovative, interactive tool designed to help new hires navigate and understand the SickKids Hospital. Developed using Unity, this virtual tour features detailed 3D mappings of the hospital, engaging educational mini-games, and compelling patient narratives to enhance learning. My leadership ensured the successful integration of complex game mechanics and character interactions, underpinned by a robust NoSQL database, culminating in a seamless and informative onboarding experience.

Summarily

Summarily

Summarily is a full-stack web application developed as a final group project for a computer science course at Brock University. As part of an eight-member team, I contributed to the backend development of this innovative service, which allows users to submit links to articles, YouTube videos, or webpages for summarization. The summarized content is displayed on the frontend and stored in a database for future retrieval via a unique link. My specific responsibilities included implementing user authentication, managing database interactions, and creating a Python-based system for summarizing YouTube videos. Additionally, Summarily offers premium features that allow users to customize summaries and enhance video comprehension.

Supplements Reorder Management System

Supplements Reorder Management System

During my summer 2023 internship at a medical office, I developed a comprehensive sales tracking and reorder system for a supplement store. This full-stack application, designed entirely by me, effectively manages and tracks all supplement sales, storing detailed information about clients and their orders in a PostgreSQL database. Written using JavaScript, Node.js, Express, and React, the system automates email reminders to both the medical office and patients 7 days before supplements need to be reordered. This ensures continuous availability of required supplements and enhances inventory management. The application continues to be actively used by the medical office to this day.

Mangler

Mangler

My latest project, a hack-and-slash boss fighting game developed using Unreal Engine, players take on the role of a mechanic battling a possessed monster truck turned monster, inspired by the dynamic gameplay of Monster Hunter. As part of a three-person team, I was tasked with developing critical game mechanics including player movement, attack registration, and a complex combo scoring system. Additionally, I implemented robust systems to track damage until player defeat and created the game’s win/lose logic, along with a persistent scoreboard to enhance competitive gameplay. This project showcases an innovative blend of mechanics and thrilling challenges in a unique gaming environment.
